Henri Lansbury’s Aston Villa nightmare could be coming to an end with the Sun (1 August, page 53) reporting that the seldom-seen midfielder will be allowed to leave ‘for the right price’.
Back in January 2017, Lansbury was one of the most coveted players in the Championship. He was the captain of Nottingham Forest and, after a superb start to the season which resulted in six goals from midfield, Aston Villa fought off a whole host of clubs to snap him up for a bargain £2.75 million, as reported by the BBC.
At least, Lansbury looked like a bargain at the time. But, after nearly three years at Villa Park, it’s fair to say they haven’t seen much return on their investment.
The former Arsenal youngster has scored just two goals in 31 Championship games for the Midland giants. And he has featured in just three games since Dean Smith replaced Steve Bruce at the helm in October of last year.
It remains to be seen how much Aston Villa will sell Lansbury for but any profit they make on their £2.75 million outlay will be more than welcome.
“He’s a very decent player,” former manager Bruce told the Daily Star of the 28-year-old in 2017.
His talent has never been in question but Aston Villa simply looks like the wrong club at the wrong time for a player who would surely be a star at the majority of Championship clubs.
