Birkir Bjarnason started just 11 Championship games last season and don’t expect him to be a Premier League regular under Dean Smith.

Aston Villa will let Birkir Bjarnason leave before the transfer window shuts if they receive a ‘suitable offer’ for the Iceland international, according to the Express and Star.

With 12 new players arriving in a remarkable summer spending spree, Dean Smith’s Premier League newcomers are now turning their attention to trimming down a bloated squad with just over a week until the new season kicks off.

Albert Adomah, Alan Hutton, Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan were all released after the 2-1 play-off final victory against Derby County at Wembley while Andre Green joined Preston on loan this week.

Scott Hogan, Henri Lansbury and £7 million goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic are expected to have new clubs by the end of August and, according to the Express and Star, Bjarnason has also been made available.

This will come as no surprise, particularly as the 31-year-old started just 11 Championship games last season. The additions of Marvelous Nakamba, Douglas Luiz and co have forced him ever further down the pecking order.

A £1.8 million signing from Basel in January 2017, Bjarnason was a squad player at best under Smith’s predecessor Steve Bruce and it feels like his time at Villa Park has simply come to an end.
