Daniel Sturridge needs a fresh start but could he get that in the Premier League with Dean Smith’s Aston Villa?
Daniel Sturridge has held talks over a move to Aston Villa as the former Liverpool striker looks to get his once glittering career back on track, according to the Mirror.
One of the best English footballers of his generation finds himself without a club just three weeks before the start of a new Premier League season. And it speaks volumes about how far Sturridge’s has fallen that, almost a month after Liverpool confirmed his departure, club’s don’t exactly appear to be banging on the door to hand the 29-year-old a contract.
That surely has a lot to do with the relentless injury problems that saw Sturridge go from Liverpool’s star man under Brendan Rodgers to a bench-warmer at best under Jurgen Klopp.
But, if he does want to stay in the Premier League amid speculation that he could move to Italy or Spain, Aston Villa could be willing to hand a goalscorer with fearsome natural ability a fresh start.
Dean Smith’s side have already spent over £100 million this summer though, if he stays fit and rediscovers his 2014 form, Sturridge could be the most inspired addition of the lot and a player capable of firing them into the top half of the table. The Mirror says that Aston Villa have held talks with the former Chelsea and Manchester City man.
Though while fitness issues might put potential suitors off, a six-week ban for breaking the FA’s betting regulations won’t exactly make him a more tempting proposition.
Interestingly, Sturridge also had a loan spell at Villa’s local rivals West Bromwich Albion, failing to score in six games for The Baggies in 2018.
