Report: Aston Villa favourites to sign Abel Hernandez ahead of Leeds

Abel Hernandez’s expiring Hull City contract has enticed a number of Championship clubs with Aston Villa and Leeds United among those linked.

Leeds United appeared to be closing in on one of their most exciting signings of recent times when the Yorkshire Evening Post reported that they were hoping to sign Abel Hernandez on a free transfer.

The Hull City striker will leave the KCom Stadium this summer with his contract due to expire and finished the 2017/18 season with eight goals, despite being limited to just ten starts due to a ruptured Achilles.

Hernandez, who scored 20 times in Hull’s 2015/16 promotion winning season, appears to be the prolific Championship goal-scorer that Leeds have missed since Chris Wood left for Burnley last summer.

But, in a surprise twist, Leeds Live are now reporting that Leeds are no longer the favourites to sign the Uruguayan international.

It is understood that Aston Villa are instead leading the chase and, should they beat Fulham in the upcoming Championship play-off final, it is understood that manager Steve Bruce will attempt to reunite with his former Hull talisman.

Leeds Live add that Leeds have made a serious offer which is tempting Hernandez towards Elland Road, while he is understood to be a fan of the Whites’ style of play.

Should Villa emerge victorious at Wembley, however, they will be able to offer Premier League football which should give them the edge.

Sky Sports stated that Aston Villa tried to sign Hernandez back in 2016 but the deal fell through after agreeing a club-record £20 million fee.
