Report: Aston Villa could consider new Lewis Grabban approach

Nottingham Forest appear to be closing in on the signing of Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban but are Championship rivals Aston Villa in the running?

Lewis Grabban’s stellar 2017/18 season has made him one of the Championship’s most in-demand strikers.

According to the Nottingham Post, Nottingham Forest are confident of landing the 30-year-old striker after holding positive talks but Leeds and Birmingham City – who allegedly made a £5 million bid on Tuesday – are also in the running.

As it stands, however, it seems that Forest are leading the chase to sign a striker who netted 20 goals last season during loan spells at Sunderland and Aston Villa. Only Golden Boot winner Matej Vydra scored more.

Aston Villa would no doubt love to bring Grabban back to the Midlands after a superb loan spell in the second half of last season, where he scored 12 goals in 18 starts.

The Birmingham Mail claims that Villa could even consider another approach to sign Grabban from parent club Bournemouth, although no offer has been forthcoming so far.

These reports will certainly raise eyebrows among Villa fans. It is well documented that the club is embroiled in a financial crisis after missing out on promotion and under pressure to raise £40 million to avoid FFP sanctions.

So the prospect of joining the race for a £5 million striker seems very hopeful indeed, particularly as they have not managed to sell any players yet in order to raise funds for new additions.

By the time the likes of Jack Grealish bid farewell and boost the coffers, it might be too late with the race for Grabban hotting up.
