Aston Villa are reportedly keen to sign Australian international midfielder Massimo Luongo from Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers.

Massimo Luongo would be a fine addition to Aston Villa’s squad no matter what division they are playing in next season.

The former Tottenham Hotspur youngster has been a cut above for QPR in 2017/18 and is one of the Championship’s stand-out midfielders. But., blessed with the ability to control a game from midfield and a much improved goal tally, Luongo has shown that he could step up to the Premier League, too.

According to Australian publication The World Game, the Socceroos star is a target for Aston Villa this summer.

And the Mirror (23 April, page 49) has now seemingly added weight to those claims by stating that Steve Bruce’s side have continued to monitor the 25-year-old, with a place in the Championship play-offs now assured.

Central midfield is one of the strongest areas of Villa’s squad with the likes of Henri Lansbury – a proven performer at this level who starred for Nottingham Forest – struggling for regular starts in recent months.

But Luongo would arguably be an upgrade on the likes of Lansbury and Connor Hourihane, having netted six goals this season.

It is uncertain how much QPR would demand for their play-making talisman this summer but, considering he is under contract until 2020, he would not come cheap.

So, as The World Game claimed, Villa would need to earn a place back in the promised land of the Premier League to fund a deal.
