Former Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has made just nine Premier League starts in his debut season at Unai Emery’s Arsenal.

Arsenal have decided to release Stephen Lichtsteiner this summer after the Swiss defender’s ill-fated debut season at the Emirates Stadium, according to Goal.

The Gunners appeared to have pulled off a very smart signing when they snapped up one of the most decorated defenders around last summer, signing the 35-year-old on a free from Juventus.

Lichtsteiner won seven Serie A titles during a trophy-laden spell in Turin while also amassing 104 caps for the Switzerland national team. But, with his best days behind him, the rampaging right-back has looked every one of his 35 years in North London.

He has made just nine Premier League starts under Unai Emery with torrid displays against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City living long in the memory.

And Lichtsteiner has struggled to establish himself in the team even with Hector Bellerin ruled out through injury, Ainsley Maitland-Niles nailing down the right-back role in his place.

According to Goal, Lichtsteiner is now on borrowed time at Arsenal with the club deciding against extending a contract that will expire at the end of the current campaign.
