Arsenal are planning a shock raid of Manchester United for out-of-contract midfielder Ander Herrera this summer, according to the Mail.

The long-serving Spaniard has been one of United’s top performers since the insidious reign of Jose Mourinho was brought to an end in December, playing a key role in the club’s recent revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Despite this, United have still failed to tie Herrera down to a new contract with his current deal set to expire in July. Negotiations have been ongoing for 18 months, but the Mail reports that talks have now hit an impasse, casting doubt on the former Athletic Bilbao star’s immediate future.

The Mail adds that Premier League rivals Arsenal are looking to take advantage and could offer Herrera a big-money deal to swap Old Trafford for The Emirates.

The 29-year-old is a player blessed with great tenacity, experience and leadership skills. In short, he is exactly the sort of midfielder Arsenal have been crying out for since the era of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva.

It is claimed that Herrera is earning £80,000 a week currently but wants a pay rise that would take his wages to around £150,000.
