Dele Alli may be the toast of the English game today but, just a few short years ago Jack Wilshere was standing in his shoes.
A gifted young play-maker tipped by none other than Xavi to climb the heights of footballing stardom, few predicted that Wilshere would be plying his trade alongside Josh King and Junior Stanislas at Bournemouth’s 11,000 capacity Vitality Stadium six years on.
Meanwhile, it is Alli who has got fans expectant and pundits flustered these days, spitting out as many adjectives as they can muster. After a superb first season in the top flight with Tottenham Hotspur, culminating in the PFA Young Player of the Year award, Alli has put any fears of second season syndrome to bed with a prolific run of form.
His two well-placed headers against Chelsea on Wednesday not only demonstrated his ability to time runs into the box and finish with composure, it showcased his fearlessness and big-game mentality.
In fact, including his opener in Spurs’ 2-1 win against Burnley on December 18, Alli has found the net seven times in just seventeen days including doubles against both Southampton and Watford.
On the other hand, Wilshere has scored just seven Premier League goals in the whole of his Arsenal career.
Direct comparisons hardly factor difference in positions and attributes of course but, as it stands, Alli is looking a lot more likely to fulfil his potential than his North London rival.
