Aiden McGeady always had the natural ability to make League One football look like a stroll in the park.

And after a sluggish start to the season, the former Republic of Ireland international is belatedly starting to establish himself as arguably the biggest talent in England’s third tier.

McGeady has scored five goals in his last five games and also created two assists in the recent 4-2 win against fellow promotion chasers Barnsley, earning the club’s Player of the Month award as a result.

And, speaking to The Chronicle, full-back Reece James has admitted that the one time Celtic, Everton and Spartak Moscow forward could play at a far higher level.

“He’s been different class in every game, to be honest,” said James, who has struck up an impressive relationship with McGeady on the left-wing.

“I think he’s head and shoulders above this level. Far too good for it.”

McGeady told the Daily Record in November that he would jump at the chance to return to Celtic, eight years after his stellar spell in Glasgow came to an end.

As it stands, however, the prospect of the 32-year-old leaving the Stadium of Light doesn’t bare thinking about for Sunderland fans who are being thrilled by his increasingly effective performances on a weekly basis.

McGeady was the Man of the Match again in the 1-1 FA Cup second round draw with Walsall, scoring with the captain’s armband around his bicep.
