Jake Hastie is starring in League One with Rotherham United – what does the future hold at Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers?

To say Jake Hastie has made a positive impression at Rotherham United since joining on loan from Rangers would be an understatement.

A winger who moved to Ibrox on a free when his Motherwell contract expired was sent out to the New York Stadium in order to give him access to as much first-team football as possible. A place in the starting XI was hardly guaranteed at Rangers, after all, with Sheyi Ojo, Brandon Barker, Jordan Jones and £7 million signing Ryan Kent all fighting for a place in Steven Gerrard’s plans.

But, just a few weeks into his spell in South Yorkshire, Hastie is showing why the Glasgow giants think they’ve found a real star of the future.

Rotherham manager Paul Warne was blown away by 20-year-old after he scored a brilliant free-kick on his debut last week and, in just his second appearance for The Millers, he played a starring role as they battered Bolton Wanderers 6-1.

And this time it was midfielder Jamie Lindsay raving about a youngster whose comparisons with Gareth Bale are starting to make perfect sense.

“Jake has been one I’ve looked after since he arrived and he’s good to have around. I played against him last season and he got a brilliant move to Rangers, but you could see his quality against Doncaster in his first game for us too,” said the one-time Celtic and Ross County enforcer, speaking to the club’s official website.

“He was really impressive, so hopefully he can keep that up and be a real asset for us moving forward this year.”

The early signs suggest that this is a move that suits everyone involved. On this evidence, Hastie should return to Rangers next year with his confidence through the roof and a full season of senior football under his belt.
