Adrian could leave West Ham United and the Premier League for a return to La Liga with former club Real Betis.

Five years after Real Betis sold Adrian to West Ham United, the La Liga club want him back.

According to Spanish daily AS, Betis are changing up their goalkeeping options and have already completed the signing of Espanyol’s former Tottenham shot-stopper Pau Lopez ahead of next season.

And it is understood that Lopez could be joined at the Benito Villamarin by Adrian, particularly if the currently sixth placed Andalusians qualify for the Europa League. The 31-year-old, who is out of contract next summer, wanted to leave West Ham last summer and might jump at the chance of a return to where it all began.

But surely West Ham should not agree to sell Adrian without a replacement lined up. Joe Hart will go back to Manchester City when his loan expires, after all, which would leave the Hammers without a recognised goalkeeper.

That, however, is where a potential swap deal comes in. AS claimed last summer that West Ham were keen on signing Antonio Adan from Betis before plumping for Hart, whose season-long loan was obviously cheaper than the Spaniard’s £7.3 million price-tag.

12 months on, however, Adan looks set to be moved on for the same reason that Hart lost his place at City – his distribution. The former Real Madrid custodian is an old-school shot-stopper who is far from comfortable with the ball at his feet, something that has caused problems in Quique Setien’s free-flowing Betis team.

So what are the chances that Adrian is swapped for Adan this summer?
