£19m Southampton flop Guido Carrillo left the Premier League for a loan spell in La Liga with Mauricio Pellegrino’s Leganes.

For around half an hour on Saturday afternoon, Mauricio Pellegrino’s Leganes were level with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabau. And, just to rub it in the faces of Southampton fans, it was their £19 million flop Guido Carrillo who scored the equaliser.

Normal service soon resumed, however, with a Karim Benzema double helping Real cruise to a second successive 4-1 La Liga victory.

But Carrillo’s first goal in Spain did not go unnoticed by Southampton fans who watched him toil for four months at the tail end of last season.

The South Coast side smashed their transfer record to sign the Argentine striker from Monaco in January, though it quickly became apparent that he was not the answer to their problems in front of goal.

Carrillo made just seven Premier League appearances and failed to hit the net.

But he’s already managed to open his account for Leganes, slotting a penalty past Real debutant Thibaut Courtois at the home of the European champions on the same day that Charlie Austin missed from 12 yards against Crystal Palace.

Some Southampton fans, however, are seeing the positive side. An impressive season under his former Saints and Estudiantes boss Pellegrino will add a few pounds to Carrillo’s price-tag should they wish to cash in at the end of the season after all.
