Kamara struggled as Rangers lost the Old Firm derby to Celtic but he was back in form as Finland beat Greece in Euro 2020 qualifying.
Glen Kamara was the best player on the pitch yet again for Finland on Thursday night.
In fact, the Rangers midfielder was so impressive that his coach didn’t even dare take him off the pitch, despite the fact that he was walking a tightrope in the final 20 minutes of a narrow 1-0 win with a yellow card on his head.
It’s hard to believe Kamara has only earned seven international caps so far. The gifted play-maker, who joined Rangers in January from Dundee, has wasted no time at all in making himself the beating heart of the Finland team, even if Norwich City talisman Teemu Pukki is still the star man on paper.
Pukki scored the winner from the spot against Greece in Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier but it was Kamara who won the penalty in the first place, bamboozling the opposition defence and drawing a foul from Dimitrios Kourbelis.
Finnish publication Ilta Sanomat hailed Kamara for his ‘stunning’ performance after a win which puts the Scandinavians second in their group, three points behind Italy with four wins from five games.
Coach Markku Kanerva admitted to Aamulehti that he considered taking Kamara off after he picked up a caution midway through the second half but, so impressive was the former Arsenal youngster, he simply had to stay on the pitch until the end and see the game out.
“I am very happy with the team, for the boys and for the fans,” Kamara himself told IS after a result which gives Finland genuine hope of qualifying for a major tournament for the first time ever.
After a below-par display in Rangers’ Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic last weekend, Kamara could have hardly produced a more resounding response to his critics.
