Reece Oxford hasn’t played a Premier League game for West Ham this season and a move to the Scottish Premiership with Rangers should appeal

Rangers took their signings into double figures during the summer transfer window but there are a few areas where Steven Gerrard is still keen to strengthen.

According to The Express, the former Liverpool captain wants four new signings in January with a centre-back and a midfielder top of his wish-list. And Gerrard could kill two birds with one stone by bringing in a player Mark Warburton tried and failed to lure to Ibrox back in 2017.

The Sun reported that Warburton wanted to sign Reece Oxford on a temporary spell from West Ham United midway through Rangers’ first season back in the Scottish Premiership – and with the versatile youngster seemingly still available, Gerrard should pick up where Warburton left off.

Oxford simply hasn’t kicked on since he made his debut in a 2-0 win against Arsenal at the age of 16 three years ago – and he hasn’t been included in a single Premier League match-day squad under Manuel Pellegrini.

Sky Sports (20 November) reported that Borussia Monchengladbach want the 19-year-old on a permanent basis after he spent time on loan at the Bundesliga club last season. But a short-term move to Rangers could be a great for all parties – and not just because he could play in defence and midfield for Gerrard.

The Rangers manager has shown an ability to improve young talents like Glenn Middleton, Ovie Ejaria and Ryan Kent after all. And, who knows, maybe he could save his West Ham career with an impressive spell north of the border.
