Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is reportedly still hopeful of bringing his former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel to the Scottish Premiership.

Steven Gerrard might have turned Rangers into a strong-willed, characterful unit seemingly capable of putting together a run of results that appeared beyond the slapdash sides of Pedro Caixinha and Mark Warburton – but the defence remains a glaring issue.
The Gers have made far too many sloppy mistakes at the back of late, particularly during a 4-3 Europa League defeat at Spartak Moscow that irked the ire of a furious Gerrard.
Simply put, Rangers cannot afford similar errors if they are to reach the knockout stages of the Europa League and challenge on the domestic stage in the coming weeks and months.
So this is perhaps why a deal for Martin Skrtel could be back on the cards.
It is no secret that Gerrard wanted to bring his former Liverpool team-mate to Ibrox over the summer, only for Skrtel’s agent Karel Csonto to pour cold water on the speculation with Rangers seemingly unable to afford the Slovakia defender’s wages, as reported by the Daily Record.

But with the board willing to back their manager in January, it seems that the Skrtel plan has been redrafted. CNN are claiming that Rangers have revisited their interest in the 33-year-old, whose contract at Fenerbahce expires at the end of the season.
Now, it is obvious what the £4 million-rated Skrtel would bring – experience, big-game nous and leadership skills, not to mention a rough-house, combative style.
His addition would only aid Rangers both on and off the pitch.
