Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have acted quickly to reportedly snap up Connor Goldson from Premier League Brighton and Hove Albion.
Rangers’ rather ponderous approach to the transfer market in previous windows meant a number of players who were clearly coveted at Ibrox slipped through their grasp.
The Glasgow giants missed out on the likes of Jordan Jones, Kenny McLean and Louis Moult after making lowball offers that were quickly laughed off. And Rangers’ rather ineffective approach was perhaps best reflected in the Jamie Walker saga.
Rangers were obviously very interested in the Hearts winger but refused to pay the £1 million asking price, instead making a series of smaller bids. In the end, Walker went to Wigan and admitted that he was left in doubt about how much Rangers even wanted him in the first place due to their reluctance to pay the fee.
Although, to Rangers’ credit, they appear to be acting quicker, and more decisively, this summer.
And, according to the Scottish Sun, that is how much Rangers have agreed to pay. And reports that a deal is close will be a big relief for supporters, who might have been worried that this would descend into another unseemly saga.
In a further indication of Rangers’ new aggressive approach, a deal for Ovie Ejaria looks set to be near completion too, just days after they were first linked with the Liverpool midfielder.
It seems that Rangers have learned their lessons. If you want a player, you had better pay the fee.
