Steven Gerrard and Scott Arfield are in at Rangers – and a number of players look set to depart Ibrox this summer too.

After two years of underachievement, Rangers should be lauded for at least trying to bring about change at Ibrox.

Since returning to the Scottish top flight in 2016, Rangers have never even looked like challenging Celtic’s monopolisation of the domestic game. They certainly haven’t been helped by substandard management and some truly baffling recruitment.

Though it seems that Rangers are attempting to change things for the better this summer.

While the cynics have lined up to point and laugh at the club’s decision to hand the unproven Steven Gerrard his first managerial role, they should be applauded instead for taking a risk. Gerrard might prove to be another Pedro Caixinha but his arrival smacks of ambition and an attempt to do things differently.

And now, according to The Express (10th May, page 55), Rangers are set to switch up their squad too and get rid of a wide range of players who, to put it simply, are just not good enough for a club with such lofty ambitions.

It is understood that Fabio Cardoso, Eduardo Herrera, Andy Halliday, Jak Alnwick, Joe Dodoo and Michael O’Halloran are all expected to be shown the door while Russell Martin, who has disappointed since arriving on loan in January, is likely to return to Norwich.

Russell Martin of Rangers is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

In the meantime, Rangers have signed Scott Arfield from Premier League Burnley, are keen to bring back three-time Scottish Premiership winner Allan McGregor and are also interested in Peterborough United’s Jack Marriott, the most prolific striker in the English Football League, according to Sky Sports.

The word ‘ambitious’ springs to mind.

Time will tell whether this latest overhaul has the desired effect but the future certainly looks brighter.
