Lewis Ferguson was released by Glasgow Rangers in 2013 and he continues to prove them wrong.

For the second time this season, Rangers have been knocked out of a cup by Aberdeen.

Goals from Niall McGinn and Connor McLennan sealed a brilliant win for the Dons at Ibrox on Tuesday night, a result that sees the Gers exit the Scottish Cup at the quarter-final stage as their wait for a first major trophy since 2012 goes on.

It was a miserable night for the Glasgow giants. But perhaps they should turn this into an opportunity instead.

After all, they have just come up against a player who they should make one of their top transfer targets in the summer.

Rangers have been linked with Dons skipper Graeme Shinnie of late (the Express) but it is his young midfield partner Lewis Ferguson who should be top of Steven Gerrard’s wish list.

At the age of 19, Ferguson is establishing himself as one of the rising stars of Scottish football and he is quickly becoming the scourge of Rangers.

He scored the winner as Aberdeen beat Rangers in the Scottish League Cup semi-final in October and he shone again on Tuesday with a performance that highlighted his blend of skill and tenacity.

To make matters worse, Ferguson spent five years in Rangers’ academy before being released in 2013.

The Gers have shown they are not afraid to bring players back to Ibrox; see Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty. It is time they offered Ferguson a second chance, too.
