George Edmundson has played just one minute of Scottish Premiership football since joining Steven Gerrard’s Rangers from Oldham Athletic.
George Edmundson has admitted that he has found the lack of game time difficult to deal with since joining Rangers in the summer, speaking to the Daily Record.
The 22-year-old centre-back certainly got used to playing regular first-team football last season. In all competitions, Edmundson featured 54 times for Oldham Athletic before moving to Glasgow for a fee of £650,000, according to the Record.
The highly-rated centre-back has made just four appearances in his first few weeks under Steven Gerrard, however, with just a single minute of football to his name in the Scottish Premiership so far. Edmundson was even left out of the matchday squad entirely for the recent Old Firm derby clash with Celtic.
But while Edmundson admits it’s not easy adapting to life on the bench, he is using Nikola Katic as inspiration as he looks to belatedly get his Rangers career off the ground.
“It is hard coming from Oldham and having played every game but I knew it was going to be like this so I’m not going to get down,” he said.
“Niko’s someone I look up to. Last season he was in the same situation I am in now.
“He’s a top player and a great defender and someone I can learn from alongside Connor and Filip. He spoke to me and some of the staff have spoken about it too, how Niko was in and out but he kept going.”
Like Edmundson, £2 million man Katic found himself well down the pecking order at Rangers during his debut season but he didn’t give up and, after finally earning Gerrard’s trust, he’s now one of the first names on the team sheet.
