There are undoubted similarities between Southampton’s former Rangers midfielder and the new Ibrox favourite Greg Docherty.

Greg Docherty has not hogged too many headlines since he signed for Rangers from Hamilton Academical in the January transfer window for £675,000, as reported by the Scotsman.
But the diminutive midfielder continues to go about his work effectively and efficiently for Graeme Murty’s side. Docherty made his seventh appearance for his new club in the 4-1 thrashing of St Johnstone on Tuesday night and, once again, earned plenty of praise from supporters for his busy, energetic performance.
Watching Docherty buzz around the pitch, link play, hassle and harry, it is difficult not to be reminded of a certain former Rangers favourite who the fans would love to see return to Ibrox.

There had been rumours that Steven Davis could make an emotional return to the blue half of Glasgow from Premier League side Southampton in the summer, six years after he departed following their demotion to the fourth tier.
The Northern Ireland international was a big favourite at Ibrox, winning three straight Scottish Premiership titles and even captaining the side on numerous occasions. Davis, however, is 33 these days and, even if fans believe he would be the best midfielder in Scotland, it is difficult to imagine the veteran living up to those halcyon days.

But have Rangers found the new Davis in Docherty, a player 11 years younger than the long-serving Saints star?
Docherty certainly has a similar style and, under the right coaching, who is to say he cannot develop into a player fit to fill the void left by Davis’ departure all those years ago?
