Rangers fans have expressed a desire for Steve Clarke to replace Graeme Murty at Ibrox after Kilmarnock’s 1-0 Scottish Premiership win.

It was all going so well for Graeme Murty at Rangers. Just over a week ago, the resurgent Gers could have pulled themselves to within three points of Celtic with an Old Firm derby win at Ibrox.

Two games later, however, and Rangers are ten points behind. A dramatic 3-2 defeat to their bitter rivals surely ended any talk of a title race and a second defeat followed, a 1-0 home loss to Kilmarnock with former Ibrox hero Kris Boyd netting the only goal.

So the chances of Murty landing the manager’s job beyond the end of this season when his contract expires look far more unlikely than they did a fortnight ago.

And there was no shortage of Rangers fans clamouring for the club to make a move for Killie boss Steve Clarke after the weekend’s horror result. Clarke has done a brilliant job at Rugby Park, losing just three of his 25 games as Kilmarnock close in on a top half finish.

The 54-year-old former Chelsea assistant has reminded everyone why he was once viewed as one of the most promising coaches in British football.

But there is another reason why Rangers supporters would like to see Clarke take over at Ibrox, because Youssouf Mulumbu, who worked with Clarke at West Brom too, produced an outstanding performance in Saturday’s 1-0 win.

The 31-year-old Mulumbu is out of contract in three months and would immediately enhance Rangers’ strength and steel in central midfield. Having worked with Clarke twice before, the prospect of him following the manager to Ibrox in the off-season would go down very well with supporters.
