Malky Mackay is far from the ideal candidate for the vacant role at Ibrox – just ask Rangers fans.

There may be a slight absence of obvious, standout candidates but, in the eyes of the majority of Rangers fans, there is no way that Malky Mackay should even be in consideration for the vacant managerial role at Ibrox.

For a start, he is a former Celtic defender and, just last year, told the BBC that he was hoping to be interviewed for the manager’s job at Parkhead before Brendan Rodgers was handed the reigns. Mark Warburton may have been unpopular among sections of the support but at least he didn’t have such close ties with Rangers’ Old Firm rivals.

Furthermore, Mackay was only appointed as the Scottish FA’s Performance Director a matter of weeks ago, meaning the fact that Sky Bet have slashed his odds to take over at Rangers as 7/2, putting him second favourite behind Alex McLeish, has exploded right out of the blue.

And that is without mentioning a rather uninspiring managerial record. In his most recent role, at Wigan Athletic, he was sacked after just 138 days. That’s what happens when you win a grand total of five games from a possible 25.

Therefore, he’s hardly the charismatic, high-calibre coach the fans were hoping for.
