Southampton reportedly want to bring Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield back to the Premier League after just one season at Ibrox.
Southampton have made a habit of signing Celtic’s star men in recent years, Stuart Armstrong, Virgil Van Dijk, Fraser Forster and Victor Wanyama having all arrived at St Mary’s from the Scottish Premiership giants.
Now, however, it seems the Saints have turned their attention to Rangers.
According to the Mail, the South Coast club are keen to bring Scott Arfield back to the Premier League this summer, just one year after he moved to Ibrox on a free transfer from Burnley.
The report adds that Rangers would be looking for a fee of about £3 million. But while that would represent a handsome profit on a player they signed for absolutely nothing, Rangers really can’t afford to sell their most effective performers if they are to launch a title challenge next season.
With eight goals and 11 assists, including a first career hat-trick against Motherwell on Sunday, no other midfielder in Scottish football can rival Arfield’s productivity in the final third.
Forget the £3 million, he is priceless for a club who have genuine ambitions of bringing an end to Celtic’s dominance.
