Graeme Murty led Rangers to a redemptive 3-0 win over Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

Chairman Dave King must have breathed a sigh of relief as Rangers cruised to a 3-0 win against Aberdeen at Ibrox.

The club’s Annual General Meeting takes place on Thursday and the board can expect a grilling after a disastrous 2017 in which they hired and sacked Pedro Caixinha within the space of seven months and are still yet to get a new man in charge.

So a 3-0 thrashing of bitter rivals Aberdeen could hardly be better timed.

Not only was it arguably Rangers’ best performance of the season, it also saved the board from further criticism after Dons boss Derek McInnes, who was understood to be the first-choice to replace Caixinha (Daily Record), committed his future to Pittodrie last week.

But do the Ibrox decision makers now have a tough call to make about Graeme Murty? The caretaker boss, who works with the academy when not forced to fill in on the sidelines, has made an excellent impression on the touchline over the last month.

While Murty is not exactly a tactical mastermind, he appears to have the backing of the players and the supporters while also finding simple ways to get the best out of the quality squad at his disposal.

And if the board are to take the views of fans into consideration, perhaps Murty shouldn’t be seen as nothing more than a stopgap, short-term solution.
