Glasgow Rangers reportedly want Di Placido if James Tavernier goes but Roma are allegedly ready to bring the Lanus defender to Serie A.
Rangers surely knew that signing Leonel Di Placido would be easier said than done.
According to talkSPORT, the Gers are interested in bringing the 25-year-old Lanus defender to Ibrox, potentially as a replacement for James Tavernier should the influential skipper be lured away by the bright lights of the Premier League.
But, while Di Placido is not exactly a household name on the blue half of Glasgow, he is a very talented defender who has been called up by the Argentina national team within the last 12 months. Rangers, as you might have guessed, are not the only club keen to sign the Buenos Aires-born defender.
According to Calciomercato, Di Placido also has admirers in Italy. The giants of Roma are interested in a right-back who is equally comfortable playing in midfield, alongside Serie A rivals Sampdoria.
Worryingly for Rangers, Roma could be about to step up their attempts to sign after loaning Dutch international defender Rick Karsdorp back to former club Feyenoord last week. Time is running out for the Giallorossi to sign a replacement.
Rangers, however, appeared to be waiting until January to firm up their interest given that a potential move to Ibrox for Di Placido appeared to be resting heavily on Tavernier’s future.
So the Gers have a dilemma on their hands. Do they move for Di Placido now and keep him as a back-up initially? Or do they wait and risk missing out altogether.
After a summer of inspired recruitment, landing Sheyi Ojo, Joe Aribo and Filip Helander, beating Roma to an Argentina defender would be another impressive achievement.
