Rangers’ Nikola Katic has been superb since he arrived in the Scottish Premiership from Croatian football – well done Steven Gerrard and Mark Allen

Even the most ardent anorak-wearing obsessives or Football Manager enthusiast would have struggled to tell you much about Nikola Katic when Rangers announced his £2 million signing from Slovan Belupo.
Katic was one of the less high-profile of Rangers’ many summer signings. But the 21-year-old has wasted no time in showing why the Scottish Premiership giants placed their trust in him.
The Croatian has already made eight appearances in Rangers’ first team and, to be quite honest, he has been something of a revelation with yet another impressive performance coming in the goalless draw against Maribor on Thursday night.
Alongside fellow new recruit Connor Goldson, Katic was once again a pillar of strength and maturity as Rangers sealed their place in the final qualifying round of the Europa League.

And it’s about time manager Steven Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen got the credit they deserve for bringing Katic to Ibrox. The 6ft 4ins defender had only made 64 league appearances for Belupo before moving to Scotland so his signing was certainly a risk, especially after the fleet of ill-fitting, left-field arrivals from last season under Pedro Caixinha.
But it is becoming increasingly clear that Gerrard and Alen have spotted a real talent. And this bodes well for the future of a Rangers side who will have to think outside the box to close the gap on Celtic.
