Declan John has enjoyed an excellent start to life at Rangers. after being allowed to leave on loan by Cardiff City.
Neil Warnock made it very clear what he thought of Declan John when he took over at Cardiff City in October of last year.
The Welshman had enjoyed a bright start to the campaign under Paul Trollope, but it’s fair to say he wasn’t an important part of the first-team under his veteran successor. John only featured seven times in the Championship from October to May and, with just a year remaining on his contract, it was no surprise that he jumped at the chance of a fresh start elsewhere.
And it’s fair to say John could hardly have made a more promising start to life at Rangers. The 22-year-old arrived at Ibrox on a season-long loan knowing that, if he impresses north of the border, there is a real possibility of a long-term contract at the Glasgow giants.
After impressing when replacing the injured Lee Wallace in the recent 2-2 league draw with Partick Thistle, John has gone from strength to strength in Rangers’ colours. Two well-taken goals from left-back in the 4-1 comeback win against Hamilton on Saturday were the perfect indication of the two-time international’s capabilities in the final third.
And, with Wallace out for two months with a groin injury, John has the ideal opportunity to nail down a place in Rangers’ starting XI for the foreseeable future.
While parent club Cardiff City aren’t exactly struggling at the moment – sitting a point clear of Wolves at the top of the table despite drawing 0-0 at home to Derby County on Saturday – John appears to be proving a rather emphatic point to Warnock – especially with starting left-back Joe Bennett’s form fluctuating on a weekly basis.
It’s not to say Warnock will be tearing his hair out after letting John go, but the in-form youngster could have come in handy for a side who suddenly appear to have a genuine chance at promotion.
