Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic are both battling to secure the signature of talented St Mirren winger Lewis Morgan.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers believes Old Firm rivals Rangers should be considered genuine title challengers after a summer splurge which saw more than 10 new players move to Ibrox, as reported by The Telegraph. Tongue in cheek or not, Rangers certainly reinforced impressively over the summer even if a tilt at the title will likely come far too soon.
The likes of Alfredo Morelos, Dani Candeias and Ryan Jack are already shaping up to be major upgrades on those who went before while Fabio Cardoso, Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera promise much, even if they are yet to find their feet in Scottish football.
Rangers, therefore, have certainly made a statement by spending plenty of money in an attempt to close the gap not only to Celtic but last season’s runners-up Aberdeen too. So far, however, Rangers have not had to fight off any real competition for the majority of their signings.
Although, if they beat Celtic to the signature of one of Scotland’s brightest young talents, Rodgers’ claims about Rangers being a genuine threat to their title hopes may seem a little more realistic.
According to The Mail, Rangers are hoping to bring St Mirren winger Lewis Morgan back to Ibrox, three years after they let the Greenock-born winger leave for the Paisley-based club on a free transfer.
That has increasingly looked like a mistake, with Morgan evolving into one of Scotland’s most exciting youngsters. He scored ten goals last season and has six already this, forcing his way into the nation’s Under-21 squad.
However, the report claims that Rangers hope to rectify their error, although they face daunting competition from Celtic and Swansea for a player who will be out of contract next summer.
Rangers may have an advantage if Morgan is tempted by the idea of belatedly making his name at Ibrox, but beating Celtic to his signature could be considered something of a watershed moment.
It is about time Celtic had some competition after all.
