Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Portominense’s Primeira Liga winger Shoya Nakajima in the January transfer window.

Shoya Nakajima of Japan celebrates the equaliser during the International friendly match between Japan and Mali at the Stade de Sclessin on March 23, 2018 in Liege, Belgium.

Speculation suggesting Shoya Nakajima is on his way to the Premier League has gone a little cold of late.

But reports coming out of Portugal on Thursday are suggesting that a move to Southampton is still on the cards.

The Saints have been linked with Portimonense’s Japanese winger since the middle of November and O Jogo reports that the South Coast side sent scouts to watch him as he impressed in a 2-0 victory against Benfica on Wednesday.

And, in quotes reported by The Sun (4 January, page 57), Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has commented on a potential deal for Nakajima – and suggested that the reports are far from wide of the mark.

“We want to give him the chance to make the next step,” former RB Leipzig boss Hasenhuttl said of a player currently starring for a mid-table Primeira Liga outfit.

On paper, Nakajima could fill the void left by Dusan Tadic, who left Southampton for Ajax in the summer, in his favoured left wing position.

He has scored five goals and set up five more in the league this season and is understood to be valued at £15 million.
