Bookies think QPR are in running to sign Bournemouth’s Jermain Defoe

Premier League side Bournemouth could loan out veteran striker Jermain Defoe, with Championship club Queens Park Rangers a possible destination.

Bournemouth were certainly taking a big financial risk last summer when they signed the 34-year-old Jermain Defoe on a three-year contract worth £65,000-a-week.

And, sure enough, the veteran striker struggled in his debut season at the Vitality Stadium, scoring just four Premier League goals and making a grand total of 11 starts with a further 13 coming from the bench.

And the Scottish Sun claims that Defoe could even depart 12 months into a three-year deal with Rangers, managed by the striker’s one-time England teammate Steven Gerrard, keen to lure him to Ibrox.

Although in the latest odds provided by BetVictor, Queens Park Rangers have emerged as 6/1 second favourites to land the now 35-year-old this summer, behind the Scottish Premiership giants.

And perhaps this has something to do with the fact that his former England manager Steven McClaren is expected to be appointed at Loftus Road as the replacement for Ian Holloway.

Defoe is obviously a big fan of the former Middlesbrough and Derby County boss. When McClaren was linked with the Sunderland job in 2015, the then Black Cats talisman told the Mail that he was “someone that I’ve played under for England, a good coach and I’ve always enjoyed training [with him].”

Financial Fair Play restrictions mean QPR will not have a huge amount to spend in the summer but the Scottish Sun adds that Bournemouth could let Defoe leave on loan while agreeing to pay a chunk of his hefty salary.

So perhaps a move to Loftus Road could be possible.
