Chris Mepham revealed that he was released by Queens Park Rangers and now he is a Premier League player after leaving Brentford.
Speaking in March of last year, Welsh international centre-back Chris Mepham recounted how he was cruelly rejected by the club of his dreams: Queens Park Rangers.
“That’s my boyhood team,” Mepham told the Guardian.
“They had a meeting with me and said: ‘When we come to sign someone, we look at one thing which we might try and develop. But we can’t see anything we can work on with you.’
“That was very hard to hear.”
Just ten months after opening up about his disappointment at Loftus Road, Mepham has certainly made QPR eat their words.
After a short transfer saga, the 21-year-old has made the step up to the Premier League, joining Bournemouth for a fee of £12 million after emerging as one of the Championship’s most talented defenders at Brentford (Sky).
So no wonder many QPR fans are wondering what might have been. Mepham is not the first player to who has slipped through their grasp after all.
Raheem Sterling was a QPR player before becoming a bona fide Premier League star at Liverpool and Manchester City while West London Sport point out that Stuart Pearce, Albert Adomah and John Barnes were all boyhood fans – like the £12 million man Mepham.
Barnes was even rejected after a brief trial period, before establishing himself as Liverpool legend and an England regular. QPR fans may be hoping Mepham doesn’t follow in his or Sterling’s footsteps.
