Premier League runners-up Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing PSV Eindhoven’s Eredivisie star Steven Bergwijn.
Almost any club in world football would do anything to call on a front three of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
Liverpool’s terrific trio are arguably the most fearsome attacking unit on the planet today, inspiring Jurgen Klopp’s Merseyside giants to a sixth European crown in May. If it wasn’t for Manchester City’s relentless winning machine, a first ever Premier League title would have arrived at Anfield, too.
But football fans, by their very nature, are a little greedy. And, more often than not, ever-so-slightly paranoid.
With Manchester City breaking their transfer record to sign Rodri, Tottenham bringing in Tanguy Ndombele and Manchester United landing two of British football’s most exciting young talents, a number of Liverpool supporters are growing increasingly worried about the lack of transfer activity at Anfield.
And with PSV Eindhoven’s Steven Bergwijn expressing his admiration for Liverpool’s star centre-back Virgil van Dijk, while describing the European champions as a ‘massive club’, the Anfield faithful may be hoping this encourages the Reds to step up their interest in the Dutch international.
“Van Dijk is an absolute beast,” the fleet-footed Bergwijn, who tallied 15 goals and 13 assists last season, told Goal.
“Of course, it is good to be able to measure myself against him in training with the national team. But not just Virgil, they all play for massive clubs.”
According to De Telegraaf, Liverpool have been watching Bergwijn’s rapid rise very closely and he could be exactly the kind of player Klopp needs in order to continue competing on domestic and European fronts.
The likes of Salah and Firmino looked exhausted at times during a gruelling campaign and Liverpool would certainly benefit from some quality in reserve.
