Chelsea’s U18s coach Jody Morris has been announced as Frank Lampard’s assistant at Championship Derby County.
Could Jody Morris perhaps be a bigger coup for Derby County than Frank Lampard?
As reported by BBC, the 39-year-old has been appointed as the assistant to his former Chelsea teammate at Pride Park. And, while Lampard arrives in the East Midlands with no coaching experience under his belt, Morris is arguably the most impressive youth team manager in the country.
His record speaks for itself. Chelsea’s U18s have won successive FA Youth Cups in the two seasons in which Morris has been in charge, with Lampard highlighting his renowned ability to develop budding talents as a major reason why he has made him his first appointment at Derby.
And perhaps another reflection of just how highly Morris is regarded within the game can be seen in the reaction of Chelsea supporters to his departure.
Only a month ago, the Blues continued their monopolisation of the game at U18 level, beating Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League national final to seal a domestic quadruple. They beat Arsenal 7-1 over two legs in the Youth Cup, becoming the first team since the famous Busby Babes in the 1960s to achieve that.
So Derby appear to have managed a real coup luring Morris to Pride Park.
