Everton and Newcastle United are reportedly competing to lure Galatasaray winger Garry Rodrigues to the Premier League.
Have Newcastle United missed the boat with Garry Rodrigues?
The Magpies have tried to sign the Galatasaray winger in each of the last two transfer windows with Turkish publication Gunes claiming in January that they saw a bid of £7 million turned down.
These days, however, Newcastle are not alone in showing an interest in Rodrigues, a 27-year-old Dutch-born Cape Verde international. Fotomac claims that Everton have scouted him on a number of occasions of late, with Rodrigues’ price-tag rising on the back of an excellent run of form.
He has four goals and three assists in his last six games in league and cup.
And Galatasaray are keen to make as much money as possible from their rising star, with president Mustafa Cengiz putting a substantial valuation on Rodrigues’ head.
“I had an approach for Rodrigues one month ago. I wanted €30 million (£26.5m),” he told Football Arena of the former PAOK winger, who only arrived at Galatasaray a year ago.
It is almost certain, then, that Newcastle would have to smash their transfer record for the first time in 13 years if they want to bring Rodrigues to St. James’ Park at the end of this season.
An Everton side with no shortage of funds thanks to majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, however, would have relatively little difficulty paying big for a player who could prove an excellent fit for a team lacking in natural width.
