Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan continues to struggle in the Championship but will he drop down to League One with Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth?
Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett was asked about the prospect of signing Aston Villa’s Scott Hogan on Monday.
Pompey are top of the League One table and seemingly on the lookout for an attacker capable of firing them into the Championship and Hogan could well be available, having failed to make an impact at Villa Park in the last two years.
A big-money signing from Brentford in 2017, Hogan was expected to prove his worth after being reunited with former Brentford manager Dean Smith but he has played just 32 minutes of league football since the 47-year-old replaced Steve Bruce in the dugout.
And, speaking to The News, Portsmouth counterpart Kenny Jackett has taken time to discuss Hogan – but he has made it clear that he’s looking elsewhere.
“Hogan is not one we have enquired about,” said the former Wolves boss.
“I have spoken to the Aston Villa people with regards to Andre (Green) in the last week or so about calling him back, but he (Hogan) is not one we have gone for.
“I don’t know what his wages are, I believe he went for £9m. He’s out of the side and is a centre-forward, but is not one that is coming to us.”
Jackett would surely jump at the chance to sign Hogan’s Villa team-mate Andre Green, who shone in the first half of the season during a loan spell at Portsmouth before being re-called last week.
But it seems that the 20-year-old, who scored Pompey’s winner in their 1-0 FA Cup victory away at Norwich City, is a big part of Smith’s plans having impressed off the bench against Hull on Saturday.
