Anyone who watched Portsmouth’s shock FA Cup win against Championship promotion hopefuls Norwich City will tell you why Jack Whatmough is a man in demand.

According to The Sun, Old Firm giants Rangers and Celtic are going head-to-head with the 22-year-old understood to have emerged as a target for the Scottish Premiership title-chasers.

Celtic’s need for a new centre-back appears to have originated from the seemingly inevitable exit of the out-of-contract Dedryck Boyata while the Express reported that Steven Gerrard wanted to enhance his Rangers defence too after a series of shaky displays in the Autumn.

And while the cynics will have their doubts about whether Whatmough is good enough to make the grade at either Parkhead or Ibrox, he certainly showed what he is capable of at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Whatmough was in inspired form as Pompey kept a clean sheet away to a Norwich side who have scored 48 league goals this season, earning plenty of praise from his manager Kenny Jackett.

“I thought Jack Whatmough was brilliant yet again – he didn’t miss a thing,” Jackett said while local publication The News gave the defender a 9/10 for his performance.

Worryingly for the League One leaders, Whatmough is out of contract in the summer and clubs in Scotland can exercise a loophole in regulations which allows them to sign players under the age of 23 without having to pay a substantial compensation fee.
