Pierre-Michel Lasogga’s struggles means Leeds United may not accept defeat over Danny Ings

Liverpool will loan Leeds United target Danny Ings out in January – and he would be welcomed with open arms at Elland Road.

Perhaps Pierre-Michel Lasogga set the bar too high with that stunning debut performance against Burton Albion in September. The German striker scored twice that day in a 5-0 thrashing, but has hit the net just twice in seven games since.

And it was he who received the brunt of Leeds’ fans criticism after an ineffective performance in Friday night’s 2-1 home defeat to new Championship table-toppers Sheffield United.

With Caleb Ekuban still on the sidelines, however, Lasogga is the best Leeds can hope for right now. With the January transfer window still two months away, that is a daunting prospect for supporters who are now looking down the table rather than up.

Leeds, then, should not give up hope of luring Danny Ings to Elland Road just yet. ESPN reported last month that the 25-year-old is a target for The Whites, who hope he could replicate the 21-goal season that fired Burnley to the Premier League back in 2013/14.

TEAMtalk also reported that Liverpool could loan Ings out in January after almost two years on the treatment table.

But the former Clarets frontman would rather sign for a Premier League club, perhaps reported suitors Newcastle, Southampton and Watford, as he harbours ambitions of forcing his way into England’s World Cup squad.

This shouldn’t stop Leeds, however, from doing everything in their power to bring the once-capped striker to West Yorkshire. When fit and firing, Ings is a mobile, hard-working and clinical centre-forward – three attributes Leeds, and Lasogga in particular, are lacking right now.
