Wolverhampton Wanderers were deservedly beaten 2-0 at home by Premier League strugglers Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2-0 home defeat against Huddersfield Town on Sunday felt like something of a wake-up call. Quite clearly, billionaire owners and links with influential super-agents count for little if you are not willing to match your opposition’s work-rate, team-ethic and intensity.
Huddersfield were more than deserving of their comfortable victory at Molineux, sealed by a brilliant Aaron Mooy duo, and Wolves were never really at the races, failing to force Terriers goalkeeper Jonas Lossl into any testing saves throughout 90 plus minutes.
And, speaking on Match of the Day 2 (25 November, 10pm) former Wolves midfielder Paul Ince lambasted the performance of the Old Gold – while paying tribute to Huddersfield’s hard-working midfield trio of Mooy, Jonathan Hogg and Phillip Billing.
“Wolves were all over the place. Huddersfield had a game plan and the three midfielders were the difference,” said Ince, who helped guide Wolves into the Premier League in 2003.
“As soon as they lost the ball, they didn’t give Wolves any time to play or pass the ball. All of a sudden they were then on the front foot, forcing Wolves into mistakes and unsettling the pattern of play.
“It was the perfect performance (from Huddersfield).”
Much has been made of Wolves Portuguese international partnership Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho (below) this season but, for all their technical qualities and composure on the ball, the Iberian duo barely had a kick under pressure from Mooy, Billing and Hogg.
As a result, Wolves have now lost four of their last five Premier League games and Friday’s trip to Cardiff City suddenly takes on extra significance.
