Mateusz Klich has been the best Leeds United midfielder in the last month; unfortunately he is in the Eredivisie rather than the Championship.
Leeds United’s central midfield has been pretty miserable of late.
The Whites have only won once since Paul Heckingbottom was appointed in February and appear to have gone backwards, particularly in the centre of the park, after the sacking of Thomas Christiansen.
Adam Forshaw is yet to justify his £4.5 million price-tag, Ronaldo Vieira is perhaps in his worst run of form since breaking into the first-team and the less said about the under-fire Eunan O’Kane – who put through his own net in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Reading – the better.
Meanwhile, no shortage of fans have lined up to described Kalvin Phillips as ‘League One level’.
And it speaks volumes that the most in-form midfielder contracted to Leeds right now is not even at Elland Road.
Mateusz Klich was barely given a chance under Christiansen, starting just one Championship game following his summer transfer from FC Twente. And the Polish international was loaned out, returning to Holland with Utrecht, before Heckingbottom got a chance to have a look at him.
And it only rubs salt into the wounds to point out that Klich has been in very good form of late.
Utrecht have only lost one of the seven games in which Klich has featured, coming against runaway leaders PSV Eindhoven, and has been included in the Eredivisie Team of the Week on more than one occasion.
His latest display, in Utrecht’s 5-1 thrashing of Vitesse last weekend, once again allowed Klich to demonstrate the wide range of passing and positional intelligence that first drew Leeds to him.
If Klich was playing like this back in England, he might be starting for Leeds right now.
