Scottish Premiership champions Celtic were keen to sign Arsenal shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez in January.
In the latter stages of the January transfer window, Celtic were desperate to sign a much-needed goalkeeper.
Brendan Rodgers needed to add new shot-stopper and fast with regular number one Craig Gordon ruled out for three months due to injury, meaning Celtic were very short in the goalkeeping department.
And according to the Daily Record, the Hoops had set their sights on the Argentine Emiliano Martinez, a 25-year-old goalkeeper on loan at newly promoted La Liga outfit Getafe from Premier League giants Arsenal.
But when the January window closed, Martinez was still stuck in Madrid.
Instead, Celtic brought in Scott Bain, but the Dundee loanee has not made an impression yet and 37-year-old back-up Dorus de Vries was heavily criticised for a big mistake in last week’s Europa League exit to Zenit St Petersburg.
It would be no exaggeration, therefore, to suggest the talented and agile Martinez could have walked into their respective starting XIs.
Instead, however, he cannot get a game in Spain. Martinez has played just three times in La Liga this season but has not featured for even a single second in February, stuck behind Vicente Guaita, who will join Crystal Palace at the end of the season, in the pecking order.
It seems this transfer saga has not resulted in a satisfactory conclusion for anyone, especially Celtic, who seem stuck with an out-of-favour Bain and an inconsistent De Vries until Gordon’s return.
