Glasgow Rangers were intent on bringing Chris Cadden to Ibrox last year from Scottish Premiership rivals Motherwell.
It is now one year since Rangers were heavily linked with a move for Motherwell winger Chris Cadden.
Since then, countless homegrown widemen have appeared alongside Rangers in the gossip columns from Jamie Walker to Lewis Morgan. Kilmarnock’s Northern Ireland international Jordan Jones is the most recent name in the frame, as reported by the Sunday Post.
Brighton’s Jamie Murphy has already signed, meanwhile, joining on a loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.
Cadden, however, has been pretty much absent throughout. And it is tempting to wonder whether he has now missed his opportunity to get his big break at Ibrox.
The Daily Record stated in December 2016 that Rangers were leading the way for the speedy Motherwell winger, who had also piqued the interest of Sunderland and West Ham on the back of his electric performances at Firhill.
Back then, Cadden was one of the most exciting and in-demand prospects in Scottish football. Flash forward to the winter of 2018, however, and the 21-year-old no longer appears to be subject of constant speculation about an allegedly impending exit from Motherwell.
Although that does not mean that Cadden’s development has stalled. He may have just three assists in 17 games to his name this season but that does not do his improving delivery justice.
The Scotland under-21 star is playing better than ever for Motherwell, even thriving in a new-look wing back role on occcasions. And, if Rangers’ right flank was as threadbare as their left, surely he would have been on director of football Mark Allen’s January wishlist.
Motherwell should enjoy the peace and quiet while they can.
