Rangers were beaten to the signing of Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan by Championship outfit Sheffield United in last summer’s transfer window.

Almost a year ago to the day, Sky Sports reported that Rangers were one of three clubs interested in signing the Motherwell defender Ben Heneghan.
The 24-year-old had enjoyed a fine debut season in the Scottish Premiership when he moved from non-league English outfit Chester in the summer of 2016, and with Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos set to leave Ibrox, Heneghan had emerged as a potential bargain signing for a Rangers side needing to reinforce a leaky back-line.

But, with just a few hours to go in the summer transfer window, Heneghan sealed a deadline day switch to Sheffield United instead. One season later, however, it would be interesting to find out whether he wishes he’d moved to Ibrox rather than Brammal Lane.
Heneghan has reached the end of his first campaign as a Sheffield United player without making a single Championship appearance. In fact, he was only included in the matchday squad three times in the 2017/18 league season and the only time he was spotted in a Blades kit was an FA Cup clash with Preston in February.

It remains to be seen, then, whether Heneghan has a future at Sheffield United or whether Rangers would be keen to renew their interest and rescue the defender from his steel city purgatory.
With David Bates leaving and Bruno Alves possibly set to follow, there is room at Ibrox for a centre-back.
