Rangers were reportedly hoping to sign Youssouf Mulumbu last year.

It says a lot about the quality midfield options available to Steven Gerrard now that a player Rangers reportedly wanted to sign in early 2018 would struggle to get anywhere near the starting XI these days.
According to the Mail, Rangers were interested in snapping up Youssouf Mulumbu with the experienced enforcer enjoying a fine spell at Scottish Premiership rivals Kilmarnock.
At the time, you could make a case that the former West Brom and Norwich man would have walked into Graeme Murty’s first-team. So when Mulumbu joined Rangers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic instead on a free transfer, you could forgive fans for thinking they’d missed a trick.
Flash forward to the present day, however, and Rangers are arguably putting together the strongest midfield in Scottish football while Mulumbu has proved to be a major disappointment down the road at Parkhead, making just one league appearance all season.

Rangers out-thought and out-played Celtic during their deserved 1-0 win at Ibrox in December with Scott Arfield, Ross McCrorie and goalscorer Ryan Jack outshining their rivals in green and white.
Now, Gerrard has added Steven Davis to his squad while Craig Bryson could arrive too from Derby County, according to the Daily Record.
In fact, it is a testament to how far Rangers have come in the last 12 months that a man Celtic signed ahead of the Ibrox giants simply doesn’t look good enough these days for a club who have moved onto bigger and better things.
