Iago Aspas is perhaps best remembered at Liverpool for one horribly scuffed corner against Chelsea.
But since bringing that 15-game spell at Anfield to an end in the summer of 2014, this diminutive little striker has been a man transformed.
Aspas the Liverpool flop is now one of the most lethal strikers in Spanish football and, if his 45-minute cameo in Tuesday’s 6-1 thrashing of Argentina is anything to go by, has an excellent chance of being a key player for Julen Lopetegui in this summer’s World Cup.
The 30-year-old came off the bench at half-time to replace Diego Costa in Madrid and wasted no time showing just what a wonderful attacking talent he has blossomed into since returning to his boyhood club, Celta Vigo.
It was his neat cut-back that set up Isco’s hat-trick goal shortly after he scored one himself, clipping past the stranded Argentine goalkeeper Willy Caballero.
To avid La Liga viewers, Aspas’s lively, energetic and efficient display will come as no surprise. He is Celta’s go-to talisman and the scorer of 16 goals in 28 Spanish top flight games this season.
For Liverpool fans, however, it is fair to say they cannot believe what their one-time £9 million man – whose only goal for the club came against Oldham in the FA Cup – has become.
