Callum McGregor was singled out for criticism after Celtic stuttered to a Scottish Premiership draw with Motherwell at Firhill.

Just over a month ago, Callum McGregor was enjoying his greatest night in a Celtic shirt.
The homegrown midfielder had just slammed a brilliant volley into the roof of the net to give the Hoops a 1-0 Europa League round-of-32 first leg lead against Zenit St Petersburg and send Parkhead into raptures.

But, just three weeks later, it appears the same fans who were singing his name against Roberto Mancini’s Russians have now run out of patience after a disappointing display in the 0-0 draw at Motherwell last weekend.
McGregor was fielded in an unnatural left-back position in place of the injured Kieren Tierney at Firhill and it showed. Rodgers’ failure to sign a back-up for Tierney is looking costly and McGregor, it must be mentioned, is far more at home in a number ten position behind the strikers.

So it perhaps seems a little harsh to criticise a 24-year-old who has scored eight goals this season for a below-par performance in a position far removed from his own.
But with Celtic’s performances a far cry from the dominant displays of last season, you can see why the fans might be frustrated, even if McGregor does seem a rather unfortunate scapegoat.
