Championship outfit Aston Villa loaned Jordan Lyden out to Oldham Athletic and he scored his first League Two goal against Cambridge United on Saturday

With so many of Aston Villa’s outcasts, youngsters and forgotten men impressing out on loan, some of the decisions Steve Bruce made this summer are more baffling than ever.
While Villa may be down to one fit centre-back for the upcoming Midlands derby against Birmingham City, Tommy Elphick is impressing at Hull City. Mitch Clark, meanwhile, has been a revelation at Port Vale and, in League One, Charlton’s Jed Steer and Portsmouth’s Andre Green have produced some bright displays.
But what about Jordan Lyden?

The Australian midfielder moved to League One Oldham Athletic after struggling to force his way into Villa’s senior side and scored on just his third League Two start in the 3-1 victory over Cambridge United at the weekend.
And the goal was certainly one to remember. After a horrible defensive mix-up from Cambridge, Lyden capitalised by coolly passing the ball into an open net from 40 yards – a fine way to cap arguably his best performance so far in Oldham colours.
22-year-old Lyden told the Oldham Chronicle earlier in November that he was hoping to impress at Boundary Park in order to earn a new contract at Aston Villa with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
More displays like Saturday’s will stand him in good stead.
