Newcastle United battled to a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in Monday’s Premier League clash at Molineux.
Wolverhampton Wanderers had to settle for a 1-1 home draw against Newcastle United at Molineux thanks to a controversial stoppage-time strike from Willy Boly.
Wolves have been a revelation since returning to the Premier League this season, beating the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Everton while sitting comfortably in the top half of the table with European qualification in their sights.
But Newcastle gave Nuno Espirito Santo’s side a real game on Monday night and were unfortunate not to leave the Black Country with all three points, as Boly scored with seconds remaining to cancel out Isaac Hayden’s opener.
In quotes reported by the Chronicle, Nuno has paid tribute to a battling Newcastle performance.
“Credit to Newcastle they were so organised,” said the former Valencia and Porto boss.
“After their goal the game is more difficult; they stayed more compact, more aggressive, always with the danger of counter-attacks, so the game becomes delicate for us.
“Credit to Newcastle, they were so organised, so compact and it became really hard and very intense. It’s not about the point, the story of the game could have been different as the first half was totally controlled.”
Nuno’s comments are eerily similar to those made by Mauricio Pochettino a week ago after his Tottenham Hotspur side stuttered to a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle, thanks to a speculative long-range strike from Heung Min Son, as reported by the Chronicle.
The lack of quality in Newcastle’s squad has been frequently discussed but at least they are making life difficult for the opposition.
