Now valued at £18m, Celtic could have signed Mohamed Elyounoussi for £2m

Premier League trio Arsenal, Leicester City and Southampton are all watching Basel’s Elyounoussi – who slipped through Celtic’s net.

If Celtic still wanted to sign Mohamed Elyounoussi, they would have to not only break their transfe record but treble it.

The Scottish Sun claimed in January 2016 that the Norway winger had played his way onto Celtic’s radar when he scored twice against The Hoops for Swedish side Molde in that year’s Europa League group stage.

A skilful and dynamic forward with an eye for goal, his starring performance at Parkhead that season explained exactly why Celtic were keen to take the £2 million-rated Elyounoussi to Glasgow.

Two years on, however, his reputation continues to rise. As does his price-tag.

ESPN claimed that Arsenal, Southampton and Leicester City all watched Elyounoussi in action as he inspired a brilliant win for Basel away at Manchester City in the Champions League round-of-16. The 23-year-old scored the opener and assisted Michael Lang’s winner, meaning that he has had a hand in 20 goals in just 34 games this season.

And, as reported by The Sun, Elyounoussi himself has admitted that it would cost a Premier League side £18 million to tempt Basel into a sale.

In just two years, Elyounoussi’s price-tag has increased by £16 million and, these days, he is comfortably out of Celtic’s price range.

Looking back now, they should have signed him for £2 million when they had the chance.
