Nottingham Forest missed out on Hibernian midfielder John McGinn in 2017; now Championship rivals Derby County reportedly want the Scotland star.

Back in August 2017, Nottingham Forest were desperate to sign the Hibernian midfielder John McGinn.

According to the Nottingham Post, the former European champions made three bids for the Scottish star, only for Hibs to reject each and every one of them. And, in truth, they were never likely to get their man by offering fees of around £750,000 for a player Hibernian manager Neil Lennon valued at £5 million.

Almost a year later, however, McGinn could finally be on his way to the East Midlands. But, if reports are to be believed, he could be wearing white rather than red.

According to the Sun, Forest’s bitter rivals Derby County are planning a last-gasp £3 million move for the 23-year-old in an attempt to stop him from joining Scottish Premiership giants Celtic.

It is understood that new Rams boss Frank Lampard is a big fan of the gifted midfielder, who combines a relentless work-ethic with vision and intelligence in the final third.

It seems that Nottingham Forest have moved on to other targets in the meantime but, with Chris Cohen, Jack Colback and David Vaughan gone and Andreas Bouchalakis set to join them, McGinn would arguably walk into Aitor Karanka’s midfield.

So would Forest live to regret seeing their one-time top target sign for their neighbours down Brian Clough way?
